Punk Knits by Knit Star Share Ross - Book Review

Ross Creates a Knitting Book for Rockers & Goths

Aug 28, 2008 Renee Blixt

Those looking for something different in knit should take a look at this book which contains fringy, edgy, and delightfully unusual patterns.

Punk Knits: The Book

As the saying goes, this is not your grandmother’s knitting book. Many knitters, especially young ones, want to make items that are in no way typical of everyone else. They’d like to make garments and accessories that are fresh, edgy, and a little bit out there.

Unlike Goth-knit, punk knit isn’t about dark and depressing. It’s about being artistic, making a statement, and expressing individuality, and that’s exactly what this book delivers.

Each of the twenty-six designs in the book, including arm warmers, leg warmers, scarves, miniskirts, hats, and sweaters, was inspired by a music legend, such as Sid Vicious, Debbie Harry, Patti Smith, John Lennon, Lenny Kravitz, and the New York Dolls. Each pattern is modeled by Hollywood rock ‘n’ rollers and “scene-sters.”

The Author: Share Ross

A couple of years ago, Share Ross would have said, “Knitting? Me? Never! That’s for grannies.” She has since discovered that knitting is an amazing way to make a truly anarchistic statement, and in the process make some great clothing that reflects an independent spirit. She especially enjoys snubbing the corporate entities that tell society how they should look and dress.

When she started knitting, Ross discovered there were almost no patterns for underground rocker types like her, and out of necessity began creating her own. The result is Punkknits.

Share Ross, currently an avid knitter/designer and the guitarist and singer for the award-winning independent rockers “Bubble,” formerly played bass for the platinum-selling EMI recording artists Vixen. Her knitwear designs have appeared in the magazine Knit.1 and the book Stitch ’n Bitch Nation. She lives in Los Angeles. She pursues a raw vegan life full of yarn, guitars, video cameras and anything inspirational she comes across.

Share Ross’s Reasons to Knit

Ross’s philosophy on reasons to knit is clear. She states, “Knit because you want to create something. Knit because you want to give someone a garment you made for them. Knit because you want to express yourself. Knit because you spend a ton of time on your computer and you find the feel of yarn very soothing. Knit because it calms you down in an increasingly stressful world. Knit for your own multitude of reasons that are unique to your life and your situation.”

Charity Needles

Ross has designed her own skull-tipped knitting needles, which come in US Size 13/9mm with a length of 9 inches. Punkknits will donate $1.00 from every pair of retail needles sold from their site to The Children's Network International. They are non-profit and work very hard to feed starving children throughout the globe.

The Review

This book is recommended to knitters who:

  • think outside the box when it comes to knitting.
  • are not afraid to experiment.
  • love to knit and love knitting books that seem fun.
  • like music and think Vixen and the Sex Pistols were great bands.
  • would describe their knitting style as unique, different, unordinary, and individual.
  • have always wanted to see a knitting book where all the models were rockers and had tattoos.

This book is not recommended to knitters who:

  • are looking for a book that teaches the finer points about knitting.
  • hate rock ‘n’ roll music and think the Sex Pistols are some sort of strange gun.
  • hate the idea of a knitting book written by a rock ‘n’ roller who stamps it with her own personal style.
  • want a book that tells you how to knit pretty garments for babies. This book has nothing for babies.
